Wolves in Saxony: New pack and worrying developments

Nordsachsen, Deutschland - Currently there are 37 wolf packs and six wolf pairs in Saxony. These figures come from the sustainable scientific evaluation of the monitoring year 2023/2024, which was published by the Saxon State Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Geology (LFULG), such as Lausitz reported.

of the 37 packs are 34 territories east of the Elbe, which is a record of wolf deposits for Saxony. Four territories have been added: Kottmarwald and Nonnenwald in the southern district of Görlitz as well as Reichwalde and Weißwasser in the northern district of Görlitz. At the same time, four wolf territories in Upper Lusatia, namely Milkel, Linz, Tautewalde and Trebus, could no longer be detected. In addition, the territories Daubitz II and Noeser Heide have merged into a single territory.

Current developments in the wolf population

The Fahe GW180F of the pack of Knappenrode/Seenland has been active since 2014 and is considered the oldest constant in the region. Around seven wolf territories were detected in northern Saxony. Reproductions were confirmed in the packs of Authausen Wald, Dahlener Heide, Delitzsch, Gohrischheide and Tiefensee-Löbnitz, while no youngsters were recorded in the Warmsdorfer Forst Wolfsterritrion. In the territory of Liebschützberg, a faith has found a partner.

In the Ore Mountains, the Wolf Pair Marienberg and a new pack, Harte (Altenberg/Bad-Gottleuba) were confirmed. The Rudel Colditzer Forst has disappeared in western Saxony, and the pack of masses in Saxon Switzerland/Easter Mountains was replaced by the Rudel Polenztal.

It was found that a total of 106 puppies from 33 packs were detected in the monitoring year 2023/2024. Tragically, 34 wolves were found dead: 24 died from accidents, an animal of natural causes, and the cause of death is unclear in a wolf. In addition, four wolves were removed, and four died due to illegal hunting. The wolf monitoring in Saxony is still dependent on information from the population, in particular on viewing reports of individual wolves.

The development of the wolf population in Saxony can also be tracked in the past. According to wolf.sachsen.de the first wolf was spotted in the Muskauer Heide in 1996. Since then, the wolf population has developed continuously, which is reflected in increasing numbers of the packs and puppies.
