Saxony checks 19 bridges for Carol bridge collapse-security endangered?

Stand: 19.11.2024 12:50 pm

After the dramatic partial fall of the Carolabrücke in Dresden, it is now being made seriously! In Saxony, 19 tension concrete bridges from the 1960s to 1980s are on the test bench list. Transport Minister Martin Dulig (SPD) has presented an alarming interim report and warns of possible damage that could occur similar to the Carol Bridge. These bridges are equipped with "tension corrosion-endangered clamping steel", which can fail catastrophically under certain conditions!

Don't panic! Dulig emphasizes that these 19 bridges are not automatically considered to be in danger of collapse. Nevertheless, the Situation is serious and the review is intensified. For the first time, a look inside the bridges is taken to examine the condition of the steel. The first results are already alarming: the Elbbrücke in Bad Schandau had to be closed. Nine of the bridges on the list are treated with higher priority, including the Agra Bridge in Leipzig and several bridges in Bad Schandau.

Looking inside the bridges planned for the first time

The bridges that were built in the GDR are now in focus. Dulig makes it clear that this is not a Saxon or East German phenomenon: "Even if the clamping concrete in the West is different, the construction has been used everywhere." The review could be crucial to prevent further accidents and to ensure security on the streets. The citizens in Saxony keep their breath away while the experts go to work!
