Rental prices explode: also in the surrounding area of Dresden and Leipzig!
Dresden, Deutschland - The rental prices in Saxony explode! Not only in the pulsating cities of Dresden and Leipzig, but also in the adjacent bacon belts, the costs for living space increase dramatically. The left in the Saxon state parliament raises the alarm and demands immediate measures for affordable living. "We finally have to tackle properly when building social housing!" Calls Juliane Nagel, the housing policy spokeswoman for the left faction, and requires a doubling of the funding budget to at least 250 million euros.
The numbers speak a clear language: in North Saxony, rental prices in the median have increased by almost nine percent to 6.67 euros per square meter. In the district of Leipzig, they climbed by more than eight percent to 6.50 euros, while in the district of Saxon Switzerland-Easter Mountains, an increase of almost five percent to 6.78 euros is recorded. Compared to 2020, prices in northern Saxony even rose by over 20 percent! In Leipzig and the district of Leipzig, the increases were 18 percent. These developments mainly meet the weakest of society.
Who suffers the most?
Single parents and single pensioners are particularly affected. "The rents in Saxony are increasing across the board, and that's a disaster!" Warns Nagel. In 2022, 15 percent of tenants had to spend more than 40 percent of their income for housing costs in Leipzig. The rising cold rent and ancillary costs for energy, heating and garbage disposal add enormously to people. The left therefore demands effective measures to slow down the rental increase and make living affordable again.
The new state government faces a huge challenge: it must give cities the opportunity to restrict the conversion of rental into condominiums. This decision is blocked by Construction Minister Thomas Schmidt (CDU), although the need for affordable living space is enormous. In addition, the caps for rent increases from regular 20 percent in three years must be reduced to 15 percent before the relevant regulation for Dresden and Leipzig expires on June 30, 2025.
