Chemnitz: Globus remains open - what does that mean for the future?
In November 2024, the Federal Cartel Office approved the takeover of Globus by Kaufland, which affects several locations, including that in Chemnitz. Many Chemnitzer initially expected the market hall to be closed in the Neefepark at the end of 2024. However, this remains open because it was never planned to close the Chemnitz branch on New Year's Eve 2024. The handover of the Chemnitz branch to Kaufland is planned for mid -2025, while the last day of sale is not yet determined; However, this could be April 30, 2025. From May 2025, the market hall is to be converted into a Kaufland branch.
The decision to submit the Chemnitz branch was attributed to economic considerations. The location was not profitable in the long term, although the Globus Group achieved a high operational result in the 2023/24 financial year. In order to remain future -proof, the company plans to concentrate on its core competencies and regularly check the economy of all locations. Globus will continue to rely on your own production of fresh products in butchers and bakeries.
Cartel office approval and corporate strategy
The Federal Cartel Office confirmed in a press release that Kaufland was approved for the takeover of four Leh locations, including Chemnitz. Similar developments are recorded in Bedburg, Essen and Wesel. Andreas Mundt, President of the Bundeskartellamt, emphasized the importance of selections for consumers. In the approved regions, the market shares of the black group, to which Kaufland belongs, were below a third, which did not result in sufficient competitive concerns. In contrast, Kaufland waived the takeover of the Neubrandenburg location, as competitive concerns from the Federal Cartel Office raised.
The takeover includes former real markets that Globus has taken over in the real procedure as part of requirements. Kaufland plans to expand the locations in Germany and Europe. Globus operates a total of 65 large-scale Leh locations in Germany and hardware stores in Germany, the Czech Republic, Russia and Luxembourg, while Kaufland already maintains around 770 Leh locations in Germany.
