Refurbishment of the new promenade: Bautzen invests in safety!

Neusche Promenade, 02625 Bautzen, Deutschland - Bautzen is faced with a comprehensive renovation on the new promenade, which has been cordoned off for pedestrians and cyclists for a long time. The reason for this is the dilapidated retaining wall, which urgently needs to be renewed to ensure the safety of the infrastructure. The city council has now provided additional funds so that work can be started in 2025.

The responsible city representatives point out that the condition of the bank wall along the Spree, which acts as a support for the walking and bike path, is questionable. Dirk Lieback, head of the city's civil engineering and civil engineering office, explained that the natural stone wall near the weir of the Frankenstein’s mill was badly damaged. This destruction has an impact on the asphalt covering of the path, which has already been cracked and decreased. As a result of erosion, fine material has also accumulated behind the wall, which endangers the stability of the structure.

Details on the planned renovation

The planned construction is said to contain an approximately 35 meter long and three -meter -high shotcraft concrete wall with a laid out natural stone wall, which should be permanently stable. In addition to structural stability, this measure will also serve as a construction site protection during work. An additional advantage: less building material is required, since the new wall is partially built from existing stones. These stones can also be used as nesting places for different wall creatures.

In order to efficiently protect the area from erosion, small dams - so -called groybs - are installed. At the end of the work, a railing is built between the walking and bike path and the Spree. The path itself is renewed at about 60 meters and expanded to a width of three meters plus banquet.

financing of the construction project

For the renovation on the new promenade, around 485,000 euros have been available in the urban budget since 2020. However, current estimates put the costs at around 540,000 euros, which is why the city councils had to decide on an additional 56,000 euros. These funds come from a budget of 250,000 euros, which is intended for faction proposals in the household.

The CDU parliamentary group in the city council submitted the application. In their arguments, they referred to the worrying conditions of the bank wall, which was classified as severely in danger of collapse during the last building test. It is also sought to apply for funding in the context of the guidelines for municipal road and bridge construction, for which the city must ensure that the financing is secured.

The city council unanimously voted for the application in its meeting after Heinrich Schlepperers from the CDU parliamentary group said that it was high time to start work. The discussion was short and the decision was made quickly. Hopefully Bautzen can now start in the not too distant future with the urgently needed renovation work on the new promenade and improve the condition of the path and the retaining wall.
