Bautzen's historical files threaten to be lost: rescue operation started!
Bautzen, a city with a rich history, is committed to preserving its cultural heritage. The city archive, an important place for historical documents, houses an impressive collection of 227 files that go back to 1635 when the region was still part of the Bohemian crown. The incidents of this time are of crucial importance for research and understanding the local history.
In particular, 54 of these files are badly damaged and can therefore no longer be used. This is particularly unfortunate, because the titles on the cover sheets of these documents, such as "council men", "diving church" and "repairs after the city fire", could offer valuable insights into city history. So far, a deeper analysis or use of these documents was not possible due to their question protection, since each contact with the files could cause additional damage.
The restoration projects
The city has now applied for funding to enable dry cleaning, preservation and restoration of the damaged documents. This initiative is planned for 2024 and comes from funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media and the Land Community. The funding is managed by the coordination office for the preservation of the written cultural asset (KEK), which takes care of receiving such valuable documents.
In addition, a total of 121,000 euros have been provided for five different projects for restoring this history in Bautzen since 2015. The expectations are high: after the restoration, previously unknown sources could be accessible to the Bohemian history of the city and Upper Lusatia. These finds could not only contribute to the research of the past, but also promote understanding of the cultural development of the region.
In addition, two more projects were implemented as part of a special program of the KEK. The federal government has provided a total of 74,000 euros, while the Free State of Saxony provided an additional 65,000 euros. Some of these projects were recently presented in a video of the KEK, which can be called up via their social media channels. Such initiatives are crucial for the preservation and rediscovery of cultural assets that are not only of local, but also of national interest. It remains to be seen which new information and knowledge will bring the restoration work to light. The importance of these historical files for the city and its history can hardly be overestimated, and the city of Bautzen is still committed to protecting this valuable legacy and making it open to the public as reported www.alles-lausitz.de .
This continuous effort not only maintains the city's memory, but also gives future generations the opportunity to learn from the treasures of the past and to experience the rich history of Bautzen.
