Magdeburg and Ulm: A goalless football debut with a lot of excitement!
A historical duel in the 2nd Bundesliga! The 1st FC Magdeburg and SSV Ulm 1846 football met for the first time in history on Saturday. But instead of a football festival there was a goalless 0-0, which disappointed the spectators in the sold-out MDCC arena. The Magdeburg celebrated the day before 21,933 fans they won the European Cup winners 50 years ago, but the current team could not bring this shine onto the square.
Trainer Thomas Wörle had chosen the defensive as the key to success. Ulm was challenged right from the start while the Magdeburgers dominated the game. The Ulm defense against captain Philipp Stromf, who took responsibility in the absence of other leaders, withstanded. Only a long -range shot by Mohammed El Hankouri and a dangerous batch by Livan Burcu caused excitement, but they were confidently parried by goalkeeper Niclas Thiede. Despite some promising counterattack, Ulm remained pale.
Drama about captain Stromf
In the second round, Magdeburg tried to increase the pressure, but the Ulm defense was like a bulwark. A clever handball between Stromf, which stretched out after the ball, led to a free kick that Thiede brilliantly defended. But the drama took its course: Stromf saw the traffic light card for his fifth yellow card and had to get off the field with yellow-red in the 87th minute. The head of defense is missing in two weeks at the away game in Berlin. Despite the outnumbered, Ulm could not benefit from the Magdeburg weaknesses and so the game ended without goals - another 0: 0 for the sparrows!
