Magdeburg mourns: solidarity after the attack on the Christmas market
A attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg cost at least five people a week ago and injured 235 more, including many seriously injured. The Mayor of Magdeburg described the incident as inhumane and a large wound for the city. On the occasion of the tragic event there was a commemoration in the opera house, in which members of the victims, affected people, rescue workers and first aiders took part.
In these difficult times, people in Magdeburg show cohesion and consolation. There is no space for hatred and agitation. A few days ago, around 4,000 people formed a chain of lights under the motto: "We want to mourn - give hatred no chance". This campaign was directed against the right -wing extremist AfD, which tried to exploit the attack for its purposes. The mayor expressed that the wound would leave a scar, but the community will find the right way to deal with it, as reported.
reactions to the devastating assassination attempt
Cardinal Reinhard Marx, Archbishop of Munich and Freising, recently kept a Christmas address in which he emphasized the power of change. He recalled that Christmas celebrates a turning point from hopelessness to a world of hope. In his speech, he called not to simply accept the current conditions, but to believe in change and improvement. He also addressed the attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market and the fear, doubts and hopelessness that are accompanied by it. Marx described the crime as "senseless cruelty" and "madness". The address took place in the well-attended Liebfrauendom in Munich, such as ZDF reported.
