The 11th hospice days in the Saarpfalz district recently opened in the Homburg forum, an event that was launched by the ecumenical outpatient hospice and palliative advisory service in cooperation with the Saarpfalz Hospice and Palliative Network. Prof. Dr. Sven Gottschling, pediatrician and palliative care doctor, was the main speaker of the evening and delighted with his lecture, who illuminated the urgent topics "Pain, fear and loneliness at the end of life". At the beginning of the event, Gabriele John-Neumann welcomed the numerous present, including prominent guests such as Markus Schaller, the first district deputy of the Saarpfalz district, and Barbara Aßmann, the Diocesan Caritas Director of the Diocese Speyer. Both held greetings. Schaller brought the greetings from the district administrator and emphasized the importance of the topic that affects us all sooner or later. Barbara Aßmann emphasized how important it is to honor the use of the volunteer and full -time hospice companion. "The hospice work lives from the coexistence- the main and volunteering," she emphasized, which underlines collective responsibility in the hospice work.
In his lecture, Prof. Dr. Gottschling a deep insight into the challenges at the end of life. With a mixture of scientific knowledge and personal experiences, he managed to sensitize his more than 100 listeners to the topics. He presented the complex situation for pain and loneliness in an accessible way that was both serious and humorous without overloading the audience's emotional tensions. A memorable moment was the end of his lecture when he brought the relativity of life and death into play with a comic quotation by Charly Brown and Snoopy.
The musical accompaniment by Zara Weiskircher and Alexander Arimond gave the evening a solemn setting. The two artists presented emotional pieces of music that met the meaning of the topic. After the lecture, the guests had the opportunity to ask questions and get further inspiration at a book table at the volunteer hospice assistant Irene Scheike.
District Administrator Dr. Theophil Gallo expressed his thanks to all organizers and emphasized how valuable these hospice days are. "We should not close the topics that we encounter in the community and in our personal life," says Gallo. He was grateful for the commitment to both the full-time and volunteers in the palliative and hospice work, which can bring great joy and consolation despite the challenges.
A significant part of the hospice days is the World Hospice Day on October 19, which is under the motto "Hospice for Diversity" this year. This initiative emphasizes the importance of solidarity and diversity within the hospice movement, which has been active since the 1980s. In addition to the opening events, several activities are also planned as part of the hospice days:
- On October 11th, the film “Pirnenkuchen with Lavendel” will be shown in the St. Ingbert cinema workshop. Entry is four euros.
- On October 12th there are information stands around the World Hospice Day in the Caritas Center in St. Ingbert, supported by several regional care facilities.
- A special city tour under the motto "Life value in St. Ingbert" is offered on October 15th, at which prior registration is required.
- On October 17, the Homburg women's cabaret will present its program "Hits in added time" in the St. Ingbert town hall, tickets are available in advance.
- At the end of the hospice days, an ecumenical service will take place on October 18 in the Catholic Church of St. Engelbert in St. Ingbert.
The hospice days offer a valuable platform to emphasize the importance of palliative work and to promote the exchange about the sensitive topic of the end of life.
