Trier plans great redesign: Porta Nigra becomes a pedestrian paradise!

Porta Nigra, Trier, Deutschland - The Porta Nigra, the impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site in Trier, faces a spectacular redesign! In order to better show the ancient monument, the environment is radically redesigned. Buses and cars have to give way to give the Porta Nigra the space it deserves. Trier's head of construction Thilo Becker emphasizes: "The Porta Nigra is one of the most important places in Trier" and has an "enormous symbol value" for the city.

The big serve begins with the expansion of the pedestrian zone to the Porta Nigra. Julian Lehnart from the city administration announces: "Buses, cars and tourist cable cars should no longer drive on Simeonstrasse and in Magaretengäßchen." Traffic is diverted to Nordallee and the lower Simeon Abbey Square, which should also benefit the bus drivers. The city plans to bring the buses to their destination faster!

barrier-free access for everyone!

Another important aspect of the redesign is to improve access for wheelchair users and parents with prams. In the coming years, more bus stops around the Porta Nigra are to be built and barrier -free. Lehnart explains: "We want to lower the curbs so that wheelchair users or parents can get on the sidewalk with their strollers more easily or get on the bus." Cyclists can also look forward to, because new bike paths are also planned!

The start of construction could take place in 2026, but first the plans must be coordinated with transport companies, archaeologists and the city. The costs are currently still unclear. A survey has shown that the Trier would like more shade places and an inviting place where you like to meet. The future of the Porta Nigra and its environment looks promising!
