Trier celebrates: Old railway line is finally reactivated!
Exciting news from Rhineland-Palatinate: The long-awaited reactivation of the western route at Trier takes on forms! For over 120 years, this section of the railway was an important lifeline for train traffic, but after the decommissioning of passenger transport in the late 20th century, it fell into a slumber. From spring 2025 the route will finally be released for passenger transport!
Deutsche Bahn takes care of the last work, which should be completed by mid -December. From then on, travelers can use the new train connection, which includes the modernized train stations on the left side of the Moselle. The stations Trier-Euren, Trier-Zewen, Kreuz-Konz and Trier-Haubstraße have already been completed. Trier pallia and Trier-West are also progressing, but the final work on elevators and access areas lasts until 2025.
When is the big start?
Although regular passenger train traffic only begins in 2025, the first freight trains may drive the freshly reactivated route at the end of October 2024. This means that a first step is already being taken into the future of rail traffic! The two regional railway lines RB 83 and RB 84 will connect the region in the future-and that in a fleet 60-minute cycle! Especially the RB 83, which drives to Luxembourg, will be interesting for commuters.
In addition to the progress in Rhineland-Palatinate, numerous railway lines are also polished up in NRW. The Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) lists over 40 possible reactivation projects, while 200 kilometers of railway line have been put back into operation in recent years. In any case, the reactivation of existing routes is economically and ecologically more sensible than building new routes. The train traffic in Trier is picking up speed again - and the anticipation is increasing!
