U17 submarine: Dive in the technology Museum Sinsheim from summer 2025!

Sinsheim, Deutschland - The Marine submarine U17 will be open to the public in the Technik Museum Sinsheim from early summer 2025. The submarine, which has a length of almost 50 meters and has a weight of 350 tons, was transported by Speyer to Sinsheim in the summer of 2024. This transport was carried out across water and land, which made the closure of some routes, including the A6. After its arrival, the submarine found its place in a parking lot in front of the museum.

Currently the preparations for visitor traffic are currently underway. This includes the removal of transport reinforcement straps and the welding of supports. In the future, the submarine will be accessible from one of the exhibition halls via a jetty, and visitors will have the opportunity to get into the submarine via the hatch, similar to how the submarine drivers did. In order to prevent vandalism, the interior of the submarine is secured, and various construction measures, including the installation of ventilation and a fire alarm system, are on the agenda. In addition, the submarine must be connected to the power grid.

multimedia experience for visitors

In order to offer the guests an authentic experience, multimedia elements are installed, including original noises, lighting and monitors. Visitors can not only explore the bridge and the machine room, but also visit the combination, the shower and the beds of the crew. Some of the corridors in the submarine are only 80 to 100 centimeters wide, with the through the passage height about 160 centimeters. Former crew members of the U17 will offer guided tours and tell personal stories from their service time, which gives visitors unique insights into the life and work of the 23-member occupation.

The transport of the submarine was followed by thousands of people along the banks of the Rhine. A loan agreement was concluded after discussions with the Federal Ministry of Defense and the Bundeswehr, and the project costs amount to around two million euros, which are mainly financed by donations.
