New housing market concept: Speyer is fighting for affordable living space!

Speyer, Deutschland - A new wind blows through Speyer! The city council decided on Thursday evening with an overwhelming majority to refresh the urban housing market concept. This decisive study, which started in 2017 and continued in 2020, is now to be continued. The aim is to gain deeper insights into the Speyer housing market, to analyze the range of apartments and to determine the actual need. The city administration has emphasized that the challenges of climate change should also flow into the considerations, while the focus is particularly on creating inexpensive living space.

controversy and challenges

Not all factions are thrilled! Linke, FW, SWG and AfD expressed concerns about the meaningfulness of the project. They argue that there are hardly any areas for housing in Speyer, which makes the realization of cheap apartments almost impossible. The left and the Greens also called for the existing misuse statute to enforce more strictly in order to counteract the lack of living space.

Head of Department Robin Nolasco and the SPD referred to the conversion areas of the Kurpfalzkaserne, which are considered as a potential solution. It was originally planned to acquire these areas from the federal government for around five million euros this year, but Mayor Monika Kabs (CDU) announced that this purchase will be postponed to the coming year. The future of living in Speyer remains exciting and full of challenges!
