Memory day for victims of abuse: Speyer relies on personal encounters
Speyer - a moving sign against silence! On November 18, the commemoration day for those affected by sexual abuse, the diocese of Speyer calls for a new form of commemoration. Instead of a central event, numerous small memorial meetings will be organized at various church places this year. This initiative follows the call from Pope Francis and should give those affected a voice.
The advisory board of the Diocese of Speyer and the Network Prevention have decided to design the 2024 commemoration in a decentralized format. "We want the diocese to reinforce the main and volunteers of the diocese through conversations and exchange on site," explains Vicar General Markus Magin. The suggestions for the memorial events range from lunch breaks to public meetings and meetings. A special handout offers a memorial stay that deals with the history of Daniel and Susanna and was inspired by Katrin Brockmöller.
commemorate and act together
The diocese hopes that these little gatherings will not only create space for memory, but also promote dialogue. "It is important that we not only address the topic, but also actively act," said the initiators. The candles, which were lit in the cathedral last year, symbolize hope and light for those affected. The commemoration day is intended to set an example that the voices of the victims are heard and that the church is ready to deal with the dark past.
The memorial events are an invitation to everyone to get involved and actively participate in the processing of the topic. A step in the right direction for an open and honest examination of sexual abuse in the church!
