Students become paramedics: sustainability at the Hans-Geiger School!

A new and exciting project is launched in the Hans-Geiger School on the Hambacher Höhe: a school medical service in which students have the opportunity to learn first aid. Under the guidance of Alena Ehrmann from the Malteser aid service, twelve elementary school students started their course on a Monday. This initiative not only aims to convey basic knowledge of emergencies to the children, but also to promote their social skills and prepare them for life.

The students are interested in the subject and excited about the topic. On colorful notes you have to answer the W questions that are relevant in the event of an emergency: "Where did something happen? What happened? How many injured people are there? Who is calling?" The inclusion of these questions makes it clear to the children how important it is to remain calm and focused in stressful situations. "Waiting" is another important element that you have to learn so that you are prepared for possible questions from the rescue control center, whereby the emergency number 112 is noted in large digits.

a holistic approach

The idea for the school medical service came up after an earlier first aid course at the school and was initiated by the headmistress Margarete Hoffmann and Anette Langhauser from the Malteser-Hilfsdienst. This cooperation is part of a larger network for education for sustainable development (BNE) that not only wants to impart knowledge to the students, but also convey social values. "We make a contribution to several goals of sustainability," said Hoffmann.

Under the concept of the "Frei-Day" there is a weekly project day on which the students can work in various areas. In addition to the school medical service, there are also groups that deal with topics such as agriculture or elderly care. An impressive example of the initiative of the pupils is the construction of a climbing frame, which they financed and organized by donations of 9,000 euros. Hoffmann is enthusiastic about the creativity of the children and sees great potential in the school medical service.

The importance of encounter

Felix Bohn, who organizes the offers with the Maltese, emphasizes how important it is to maintain contact with children. It is important to convey the concept of help without confronting the students with medical emergencies. "Already knowing how to make an emergency call is a valuable ability. Learning the topic of consolation is also essential. In the event of accidents on the school playground

The student's commitment shows that they not only acquire theoretical knowledge, but also practical skills that they can use in everyday life. "Working with children is dynamic and enriching because they often bring curiosity and a great need to share their personal experiences," emphasizes Bohn. This results in a lively learning atmosphere that makes such courses particularly valuable.

Anette Langhauser adds that the ESD network creates connections to school social workers who help to develop targeted measures against loneliness among students. "It is important that we support students in opening up and communicating with each other instead of withdrawing more and more," she emphasizes the importance of social contacts.

For everyone who is interested in the ongoing educational projects at the Hans-Geiger School, there is an open framework. Interested parties can use email to bildungsbuero@neustadt.eu or take part in the next network meeting on October 10 from 4 to 7 p.m. in Soku (Winzinger Straße 10).
