Roman sanctuary discovered: excavations at the Roman Museum Schwarzenacker!

Schwarzenacker, Deutschland - in the picturesque Schwarzenacker, where the white pavilions of the Roman Museum are set up, the excavation period has started again! Under the direction of the renowned archaeologists Professor Agnieszka Tomas and Professor Peter Haupt Graben Students from the Universities of Warsaw and Mainz on a mysterious sanctuary that has been known since 2004 and is hidden under a baroque garden. This German-Polish excavation campaign is an exciting cooperation with the city of Homburg and the Saarpfalz district.

District Administrator Theophil Gallo, chairman of the German-Polish Society Saar, did not miss the opportunity to pay a visit to the excavation team and to find out more about the exciting progress. Professor Haupt emphasizes the scientific importance of this work: "Several decades after Alfons Kolling's important excavations - once the state archaeologist of the Saarland - with new methods to come up with such a unique Roman monument, is scientifically valuable." This year's campaign has already formed fascinating finds that show the use of the sanctuary from 2nd to the 4th century AD. Remains of meals and ritual offerings give an insight into the mysterious customs of that time.

But what deities were worshiped here? This question remains unanswered for the time being. However, it is known that the temple has a similar architecture to the Merkurtempel that was reconstructed nearby. This research work not only promotes historical knowledge, but also strengthens the German-Polish partnership. District Administrator Gallo emphasizes that this cooperation is not only about exciting historical discoveries, but also about the exchange between the nations. In the future, students from the University of Rzeszow will also be involved in the project, which further deepens the Saarland partnership with the Podkarpackie Voivodeship.

The great interest of the public in the excavations is obvious! Numerous individual tourists and school classes from Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse and even Bavaria take the opportunity to visit the excavation site and ask the archaeologists questions.
