Mainz cycles ahead: 600 signatures for safe bike paths on the Rhine!
Mainz, Deutschland - an outcry by cyclists in Mainz! The Mainz cycling forum has collected over 600 signatures to request a continuous bike connection along the Rhine. On November 20, the petition is ceremoniously handed over to the traffic department Janina Steinkrüger (Greens). The citizens are determined to move the city to action!
The reason for this action? Resistance from residents of Taunusstraße against the dismantling of parking spaces and the creation of a bicycle road. Prof. Dr. Carsten Sönnichsen from the Traffic Club Germany (VCD) sums it up: "If more people use the wheel, car traffic decreases and this leads to less parking space." A clear appeal for an environmentally friendly traffic turnaround!
claims of the cycling forum
The cyclists require a safe, continuous and usable wheel connection on the banks of the Rhine - regardless of the weather or bike type. There should be no obstacles such as "drenching grids" or high curbs, and foot and bike traffic must be clearly separated from each other. Even at large events such as folk or wine festivals, the bicycle traffic should be able to flow unhindered. Carola Kühne from the Nature Conservation Association of Germany (NABU) emphasizes: "All citizens: inside, young or old, should be able to move safely and with fun."
The Mainz cycling forum, founded in March 2021 by various NGOs such as the ADFC Mainz-Bingen and Greenpeace, has set itself the goal of making Mainz a bicycle city. The pressure on the city is growing, and the citizens are ready to take to the streets for their rights!
