Christmas markets in Rhineland-Palatinate: Despite the attack, visitor numbers stable!
In Rhineland-Palatinate, the organizers of the Christmas markets draw a predominantly positive balance despite shocking events in Magdeburg. After a brutal attack on Friday, in which five people died and over 200 injured, in which a 50-year-old raced over the market with a car, the mood in the Rhineland-Palatinate cities remained optimistic. In Mainz, for example, people have continued their visits to the Christmas market even more after the incident. Marko Sotttile, a spokesman for the market, reports that visitors even emphasized that they are now even more. The weather also played a crucial role throughout the season, as there were only a few rainy days, which led to stable visitor numbers.
Visitor flows in the cities
Koblenz recorded a significant increase in visitor numbers. Market organizer Detlef Koenitz emphasized that almost 800,000 people were counted to the million visitors after the previous year. This gratifying development is also attributed to the good weather. The audience was also enthusiastic in Ludwigshafen, where the Christmas market was the first in the country on November 13th. Christoph Keimes, managing director of the Ludwigshafen Congress and Marketing Society, notes that the number of visitors in the first few weeks was very positive, despite minor problems with local public transport, which resulted in a noticeable drop in sales. Trier relied on a positive sales feedback from stand operators and welcomed numerous guests from neighboring countries.
The Christmas markets in Rhineland-Palatinate were also overshadowed by the events in Magdeburg. The organizers combined in solidarity and mourned together with those affected. Events were interrupted with a minute of silence and some programs were canceled. A particularly well attended prayer took place in Mainz, which was dedicated to the victims, while music and program was dispensed with in Ludwigshafen. Nevertheless, the conviction prevailed to continue the pre -Christmas mood unscathed. Security concepts were established and the police increased their presence in the markets to give people a safe feeling. The Christmas market in Koblenz will remain open until January 5, while mulled wine can be enjoyed in Mainz until December 30th.
