Camels on the pyramids: Finally better care for the animals!
Gizeh, Ägypten - A shocking reality: the famous Pyramids of Giza, a magnet for tourists from all over the world, are not only a place of historical miracles, but also the sad setting for suffering animals. The camels and horses there, which are often used for photos and carriage rides, are under massive criticism. According to alarming reports on cruelty to animals and unsustainable living conditions, the Egyptian government has finally acted!
The Minister of Antiquities and Tourism Scharif Fathi announced a comprehensive program to improve animal welfare. Mobile veterinary teams should regularly examine and vaccinate the camels and horses in the future. This expert care will not only be limited to the pyramids, but will also be extended to archaeological sites across the country. Planned areas for camel and horse mids should also significantly improve the living conditions of the animals after the previous conditions were unbearable.
a step in the right direction
The situation is alarming, however: many camels and horses are malnourished, bad abuse are the order of the day. Reports from animal welfare organizations such as PETA document cruel practices in which the animals are punished with lashes and photo shoots with whipping and kept under extreme conditions without sufficient water and feed. Even her feed from garbage dumps was observed!
A ray of hope is the announced presence of veterinarians with medicinal products directly on the pyramids - a step that is necessary to put an end to the misery. Egypt, where around 30 percent of the population live in poverty, urgently recognizes that animal welfare in agriculture and entertainment must not be neglected. This new program is a first but crucial step to improve!
