Butterfly garden for seniors: Doing good together in Idar-Oberstein!

A radiant example of community spirit and commitment saw the light of day on the World Alzheimer's Day: in Idar-Oberstein, a breathtaking butterfly garden was launched in the AWO senior center! A colorful team of helpers, young and old, grabbed vigor to create this living garden. The initiative came from AWO employee Sabine Koch-Werle, who can use an article on the employee program "Oie makes it possible!" became aware. Together with Jutta d’Orazio, she received 2,000 euros for this wonderful project.

The preparations were a joint work: volunteers were mobilized, the garden was brought to the fore and the perfect plants for the flower and nutrient garden were selected. Lars Feil, a spacious helper, even made his excavator available to make the heavy earthworks easier. Mike Stauder, the district chairman of the AWO, activated volunteers from the environment of music and dance schools, since many residents of the senior center were no longer able to lend a hand themselves. On August 10, the first work started with five helpers, and the plants were delivered on September 19. Nicole Burgard and intern Farida took care of the preparation of the site. The first planting campaign was a complete success, with 17 adults and six children who worked with joy and crowned working with a barbecue break.

A total of over 30 working hours were invested in the project. A special highlight was the find of a mountain crystal druse that was presented to an intern from Hamburg. Jasmin Klein, the head of the senior center, radiates with enthusiasm: "The transformation of the garden into a butterfly garden is a great project for young and old. Together with 'togetherness' we provided the joy of the elderly.

The program "Oie makes it possible!" shows how employees and pensioners can work for the community in their free time and reward such initiatives with up to 2,000 euros. OIE AG, the regional energy supplier, supports these valuable projects and designs the region's energy future together with its customers.
