Night of science: Sustainable innovations at the Birkenfeld environmental campus

An exciting evening full of knowledge and innovation! On Wednesday, November 13, 2024, the "Night of Science", which was eagerly awaited, took place at the Birkenfeld environmental field of the Trier University of Applied Sciences. Around 130 inquisitive students and guests from politics and business gathered to listen to the fascinating short lectures by the professors. Vice President Prof. Dr. Henrik Te Heesen opened the event and welcomed the district administrator of the Birkenfeld district, Miroslaw Kowalski.

The lectures were a real firework of ideas! Prof. Dr. Oliver Braun presented groundbreaking approaches to optimize online scheduling, supported by a successful DFG application for international cooperation with the University of California, San Diego. This is about developing the best algorithms to efficiently use resources. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Guido Dartmann followed with his topic "Green by Ai & Green Ai Made in Birkenfeld", presenting the projects Greentwin and Kira. Greentwin uses artificial intelligence to solve environmental problems, while Kira himself analyzes and optimizes the resource consumption of AI.

In the third lecture, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Gutheil insights into new partnerships and cooperation that he explored during his research -free semester. Visits to partner universities such as German Jordan University and Clemson University in the USA were on the program to promote the exchange of students. Another highlight was the academic speed dating, in which the new professors Dr. Carola Glinski and Dr. Anna Donner de Ceiba and Prof. Dr. Christian Mock presented their exciting teaching and research areas. Prof. Glinski brings the "Biotrade" project, which deals with biodiversity in trade relationships, while Prof. Donner de Ceiba focuses on labor law and civil law. Prof. Mock will lead the new English -language range of courses "Sustainable Business and Law" from the winter semester 2025/2026.

After the lectures, the atmosphere was further discussed in a relaxed atmosphere and new contacts were made. In keeping with the "week of sustainability", guests were able to enjoy the homemade apple juice of the General Student Committee (AStA), made from 600 kg of apples from the environmental campus in cooperation with the fruit and horticultural association Hoppstädten-Weiersbach. An evening that not only offered knowledge, but also enjoyed!
