Innovation laboratory on the environmental campus: AI revolution for plastic recycling!
Birkenfeld, Deutschland - The Carl Zeiss Foundation made an impressive journey into the world of innovations when visiting the Birkenfeld University of Applied Sciences at the Birkenfeld environmental campus of the Trier University of Applied Sciences! The focus was on the groundbreaking research project "Ki-genf", which is funded with a whopping 1 million euros. Prof. Dr. Michael Wahl and his committed team presented, as artificial intelligence (AI) merged here with advanced manufacturing technologies. The project deals with plastic recycling for additive manufacturing and AI-based error minimization-a real highlight for modern technology!
Imagine that errors in the pressure process are recognized immediately by intelligent image recognition, and the system stops automatically to prevent further problems! In addition to this innovative approach to avoidance of errors, new procedures for the reprocessing of plastic waste were also presented, which result in new filament for additive manufacturing. Also Prof. Dr. Henrik Te Heesen, the Vice President of Research, emphasized the important transfer activities for the combination of science and business and makes it clear how relevant this research is for our future.
A look at the research of the future
The visit also included an exciting visit to the AI laboratory, led by the brilliant heads Prof. Dr. Stefan Naumann, Prof. Dr. Stephan Didas and Prof. Dr. Klaus Gollmer. They impressively guided through the latest developments, such as an artificial nose and an inexpensive, AI-based filler indicator for garbage containers. Language model -based avatars were also part of the fascinating presentation!
The variety of innovative research topics, which are addressed here at the Birkenfeld environmental campus, impressively shows how mechanical engineering, computer science and robotics work hand in hand to create solutions for the future! The Carl Zeiss Foundation has thus set a strong sign of progress and development.
