Flood risk: Rhine and Ahr over the bank - experts warn!
On Thursday, January 9, 2025, the Rhine in Koblenz partially steps over the shores. The water levels on the Rhine in Koblenz and Andernach as well as on the Moselle in Cochem continue to rise. As announced by the Prediction Center of the State Office for the Environment Rhineland-Palatinate (LFU), the Rhine's registration height in Koblenz was exceeded on Thursday afternoon of five meters. When this registration height is exceeded, the river occurs over the bank, which can be observed in Koblenz, among other things, in the Kaiserin Augusta systems.
The first effects of the flood are already visible in the region. Individual streets were closed due to the high levels. The greatest flood has been expected on the Ahr since the flood disaster in 2021. Experts in the district of Ahrweiler report rapidly risen levels along the AHR, whereby the threshold was exceeded for a two -year flood in some measuring points.
Current flood warnings and situation
The warnings of impending floods are spread via the Warn apps Katwarn and Nina. However, the authorities are currently not an acute danger to the population. During the flood disaster in July 2021, an estimated 7 meters in Altenahr was recorded. The currently last transmitted stand on the Altenahr level is over 5 meters. The normal level in Trier is over 3 meters, while it exceeded over 6 meters on Thursday.
In addition, the water level in Cochem rose over 5 meters on Thursday morning, which is also over the normal level of almost 3 meters. Forecasts indicate that the 7 meters mark may be exceeded on Friday. The Bernkastel-Kues police also report closures, including the K 134 between Lieser and Kesten and the B 53 between Zeltinger Kreisel and the bridge in Lösnich.
In Koblenz, flood -sensitive areas such as parking spaces near the shore have already been blocked, and the fire brigade carries out control trips. The passenger ferry "Mermaging" between Remagen and Erpel will stop operating on Friday morning, while the car ferry between Linz and Remagen continues to run. At the Bingen level, the Rhine has exceeded the flood mark one, which means slight restrictions for shipping. In Mainz, restrictions could also occur in the near future due to increasing Rhine level.
- am Rhein-level in Mainz, the registration height is 5.50 meters.
- at the Trier Moselle level the registration height of 6 meters was exceeded.
- on the Lahn level in Diez the registration height is 4.50 meters.
