Plastic alarm: Europe is fighting for global agreements against the garbage crisis!

Busan, Südkorea - Brussels - alarming! Plastics Europe, the association of the plastic industry in Europe, immediately calls for an ambitious agreement to combat the devastating plastic pollution!

On November 25th, the starting signal for the decisive round of negotiations (Inc-5) of the UN Plastic Agreement in Busan, South Korea. Pioneering measures are to be decided here: The aim is to stop the plastic waste flood worldwide by 2040! Virginia Janssens, Managing Director of Plastics Europe, is aware of the urgency: "Plastic waste in our environment is not acceptable. Now it is important to achieve a tough, implementable agreement!" She calls on the negotiators to focus on common solutions. "We have to use this historical opportunity!", She says determined.

The key to the turn: circular economy!

The solution to contain plastic waste? A radical change of direction to the circular economy! Janssens emphasizes: "All plastics have to be reused, recycled and treated responsibly." But the agreement must provide financial support for emerging countries! "Sustainable financing mechanisms are needed to secure due investments!", She continues. A product -based approach is also considered necessary to identify and prevent problematic plastic applications from the outset.

Janssens warns: A universal approach will not be enough! "Countries have different challenges that require tailor -made solutions," she calls around. The agreement should therefore offer a balanced mix of global guidelines and national strategies in order not to cause unnecessary economic damage. To increase the recycling quotas, clear national action plans with effective monitoring systems are needed. In addition, plastic applications must already be designed in the development that they can easily be reused or repaired! This makes the agreement on the last chance to tame the plastic flood and make the world a better place!
