StreetScooter: Production moved to Thailand - 200 jobs in danger!
A shock for the electro transporter world! The street scooter, once a symbol of innovative mobility in Germany, reports bankruptcy and relocates its production abroad. The decision comes after failed negotiations and insurmountable cost problems that force the company e.Volution to pull the ripcord. Production in Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, will continue in Thailand from 2025, where the costs should almost decrease by half.
Günther Schuh, the head behind the StreetScooter project, had hoped to maintain production in Germany. But reality looks different: "But I can no longer win the fight here because it cannot be affected here," explains Schuh. The relocation affects around 200 jobs in Düren, and the future of the entire work at Neapco is on the brink. The failed negotiations with a German client have further tightened the situation.
production goes to Thailand
The new partnership with a Thai entrepreneurial family is to produce a 50:50 joint venture. This decision is not only a reaction to the financial challenges, but also a strategic step towards better international marketing of the electric transporter. Schuh has invested millions to save the project, but now he has no choice but to apply for a temporary bankruptcy proceedings from the district court in Aachen.
However, the vision for the new StreetScooter remains: With a new, sustainable technical basis, the vehicle should achieve a lifespan of up to 50 years. Despite the dramatic turn in production, hopes to continue the success story of the StreetScooter in Thailand and to master the challenges of e-mobility.
