Wermelskirchen: Children sing Martinslieder - but where are the neighbors?

Wermelskirchen. On Thursday evening there was a moving picture in the Wielviertel. Doors of the neighbors remained closed. The construction association, which launched a neighborhood meeting years ago, is faced with a painful lack of participation. Martin Lambotte, the chairman of the building association, expressed his sadness about the minor response: "It is disappointing that the effort of the children and educators is not recognized."

The children, led by Roger Münster, the head of the Kita Jahnstraße, gave their best and sang with fervor. But only a few of the approximately 70 apartments opened to listen to the little singers. The resident Erika Brinkämper was one of the few who followed the performance with joy. "I think it's great that the daycare centers invest so much," she said, praising the sense of community. Janine Pulvermacher also brought her children with them to bring them closer to the tradition of Martinssingen, but the sparse viewer was noticed.

A call to each other

The disappointment about the low participation was noticeable. "It is a shame that such events are so well received," emphasized Lambotte. The activities in the neighborhood meeting, which has been operated since 2017, offer numerous offers, but interest has subsided significantly since pandemic. "We hope that people will come together more," Lambotte continued. After all, the children could look forward to a Weckmann as a small consolation, but the question remains: How can the community spirit be revived?
