Celebrate unit: Scholz warns not to forget the explosive breaks
in Schwerin took place on the day of German unity, which focused on the process of German reunification. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) spoke in front of around 450 invited guests, including Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and emphasized that the unit has progressed, but was still unfinished. During the ceremony, he recalled the challenges and breaks associated with this historical turn.
The Chancellor said that despite the positive developments, the negative consequences of reunification should never be ignored. For many people in the east, German unity meant a deep cut into its life. Scholz warned that the time after reunification was a phase of great uncertainty and devaluation of their life benefits for millions. These aspects have also been part of Germany since 1990 and should not be suppressed.
celebration with ecumenical service and citizens' festival
an ecumenical service marked the beginning of the celebrations, to which state bishop Kristina Kühnbaum-Schmidt and Archbishop Heiner Koch had invited to the Schwerin Cathedral. Thousands of people celebrated on the streets of the city at a citizens' festival. Scholz also expressed his conviction that the path to the full unit required further terms and emphasized that the East had to become more perceptible in political and economic debates.
"reunification was easy for nobody," said the Chancellor. "However, we have achieved a lot and that should be honored." Scholz appealed to the citizens to appreciate the positive results of reunification and at the same time not to lose sight of the existing differences between East and West.
Appeal against extremism
Another central topic of his speech was the dealings with the emerging extremism and populism, which has become a serious threat to freedom democracy not only in East Germany, but in the entire country. Scholz emphasized that it still needs a lot of work to combat these tendencies. "We have to make a decision against this development," he said.
Together with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's President of the Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD), who appeared as the host of the celebrations, Scholz praised the achievements of the people who had paved the way to freedom through her peaceful revolution. A good 34 years after reunification, this service had not become a self -image.
A wide range of cultural activities accompanied the celebrations that last until Friday. Various federal states, institutions and organizations presented themselves in their own pavilions and stands. The evening should be rounded off with a performance by the popular pop singer Roland Kaiser on the site in front of the Schwerin Castle, a landmark of the city. The unit celebration is under the motto "Association Segel" and prepared for the following central unit celebration in the coming year in Saarland, where the state will hold the presidency in the Federal Council.
