THW inspires Mettmann student: an exciting day in the classroom!
At the Heinrich-Heine-Gymnasium in Mettmann there was an exciting day, which will remain unforgettable for volunteers from the Technical Aid Agency (THW) and for students of the 6th grade. The THW operations met in Erkrath early in the morning in order to prepare for their upcoming tasks and to create the operational clothing. Equipped with various vehicles, including the GKW 1 device car car and the multi -purpose car MZKW, the helpers made their way to school.
The emergency services played a double role on arrival: the first group prepared the vehicles in the courtyard, while others went into the classroom to interact with the students. In the first part of the teaching unit, the focus was on the theory, where the children learned everything about disaster protection and prevention. The enthusiasm of the students was obvious when they asked questions about the topics of power failure and warning funds in the event of disaster.
theoretical foundations and practical exercises
After the theoretical introduction, which also included information about the structure and tasks of the THW, a short break followed. Then the students were allowed to experience the practical aspects up close. In the outside area of the school, they learned from the emergency services how to raise the MZKW with lifting pillows or how the respiratory protection devices work. Other exciting challenges were waiting for the children when they learned how to secure someone on a stretcher and transport small tennis balls from one pylone to the next with a hydraulic spreader.
In order to give the students a feeling of how the work in the THW works, the devices were set up and put into operation under the guidance of the emergency services. For this practical experience, the helpers had provided special protective clothing such as helmets and jackets from the THW youth. The children were able to empathize with what the activities in the operations of the THW look.
The crowning conclusion of the day was the opportunity for the students to sit on the large emergency vehicles and switch on the blue light. These experiences were accompanied by numerous questions that the children addressed to the emergency services. The exchange was lively and showed the great interest of the students in the work of the THW.
Overall, the day was a complete success-both for the 6th grade of the Heinrich Heine-Gymnasium and for the THW. The emergency services were delighted with the positive feedback and would like to thank the school for trust. Such events can play an important role in clarification about civil protection and the work of the volunteers.
