Cologne customs sounds the alarm: controls in the transport industry on motorways

Excitement on the motorways in the Rhineland! On November 12th, 2024, Cologne customs tore open the curtains of secrecy in the forwarding, transport and logistics industry and carried out mass inspections. In a spectacular operation, around 80 customs officers and their partners from the police and the Federal Network Agency checked a total of 170 people on the A1, A3, A4 and the federal highway 496.

The numbers speak volumes: 40 people on the A1, an impressive 77 on the A3, 12 on the A4 and 41 on the B496. Maja Ley, press spokeswoman for the main customs office in Cologne, explained the aim of the actions: uncovering illegal employment relationships and strict compliance with the minimum wage and social security requirements. Customs leaves no stone unturned when it comes to these checks!

Plain text about the results!

The lightning-fast balance of control measures is alarming! Directly on site, there were three cases of suspicion of non-payment of the minimum wage in the Rhein-Sieg district. The investigators are also concerned with the misuse of social benefits: two cases in the Rhein-Erft district and another in the Rhein-Sieg district provide evidence of benefit fraud. To make matters worse, in one case an illegal stay in the Rhein-Erft district was discovered!

The customs officials also showed no mercy to people who failed to provide the required identification documents: This happened twice in the Rhein-Erft district and once in the Rhein-Sieg district. Two cases in the Rheinisch-Bergischen district also raise suspicions about violations in temporary employment. The desire for order in the industry is clear – the customs clean-up operation is having an impact!

The following applies to everyone who works in this sector: Anyone who works in the forwarding or transport sector should always have their ID card or passport to hand. He must be able to present this to the customs authorities at any time. After all, surprising controls could be lurking around every corner! Further details on the topic can be found at www.zoll.de.
