Cultural revival party: celebrate 40 years of whiskey saloon in Kleve!

Kleve. The Whiskey Saloon, an integral part of the Klever Kneipultur, will experience a special revival this year. On October 12th, Nostalgie will be looked back in the Bresserberg dance palace from 8 p.m. after the saloon enjoyed cult status from 1965 to 2005. This event is intended to keep the unique memories of the legendary host of Detlef Raeder, who was known for his charming and distinctive way in Kleve.

The revival party is entitled "Remember Whiskey Saloon Vol. 3". DJ Mike will provide musical entertainment and also put on original records from Detlef’s MusicBox. Tickets are available from several sales outlets, including the bookshop Hintzen and at the box office of the dance palace.

the cult host and his story

Detlef Raeder, better known as the cult manager, took over the Whiskey Saloon in the 1970s, initially only on the weekend after his wife Rita had to give the management due to health problems. The establishment was known for its rustic, cozy atmosphere. Countless Klever, including various mayors, sat together in the Whiskey Saloon.

Detlef is often remembered in its typical leather apron - even though he was still wearing a tie in the early years. He himself described that a visit to the pub was something very special at the time. "A visit to the pub was still something noble at the time," he said. His wife Rita originally opened the Whiskey Saloon, and his love for this restaurant was both visible and noticeable, until the closure in 2005.

A formative event in the history of the saloon was a fire in 1969, which almost completely devastated the restaurant. "I stood on the street with my pajamas," Detlef recalls. After the fire, the Whiskey Saloon was redesigned, with Detlef retained the distinctive Western look that the guests loved. "You can see what it works. The discotheques and pubs are constantly being converted and yet they are closing at some point," he said, stating his philosophy that consistency was more important than constant changes.

a place for memories

Over the years, Detlef has met many generations of Klevernen. The whiskey was a central meeting point in its heyday, especially for young people who were looking for a sociable atmosphere. „Es gab gute und schlechte Zeiten“, erinnerte sich Detlef und bemerkte, dass er während des Aufkommens des Granny in Kleve Schwierigkeiten hatte, gegen die Konkurrenz anzukommen. In the 80s, however, his restaurant became extremely popular and overcrowded.

The iconic host was known for his sharp humor. Dry Humor was part of his charm, especially with regard to his limited snack offer. "Nothing" cost a euro, according to the motto: "This is for the people who always don't want anything". There was no longer any coffee in his acute era because he simply couldn't do justice to the wishes of his guests. "When I had coffee, they wanted tea. Then he was too strong or too liquid ...", and Detlef wanted to prevent that.

The revival event is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate both Detlef and the time of the whiskey saloon. Not only will the music of the good old days be heard, but also stories and memories are brought to the fore. For many, this is an opportunity to meet old friends and to remind you. A very special occasion in Kleve and the nostalgia of the whiskey saloon continues.
