NRW starts large traffic safety campaign in Herne!
On Friday, October 4, 2024, an important event took place at the Realschule an der Hernen Castle, in which the Minister of Transport of North Rhine-Westphalia, Herbert Reul (CDU) and Oliver Krischer (Greens) invited you to initiative #Security Serb Transport. This initiative has the ambitious goal of realizing the "Vision Zero", which means that no human lives should be lost in the entire region as possible. This concern is underlined by the urgent necessity, because in 2023 a total of 450 people died in NRW, including 101 pedestrians.
The event attracted numerous visitors, including representatives of the police and the city administration, who received a certificate of accession with a total of 23 organizations in order to become part of the newly founded prevention network. Reul emphasized that there was an urgent need for action in terms of traffic safety. "We had the feeling that the topic slipped and it was time to act," he said.
Goals of the initiative and ministerial intervention
Krischer added that it was the goal of the country to reduce the number of traffic fatalities and the seriously injured people to zero. This shows the need to cooperate everyone involved. The partners of the network actively bring themselves into the process, with a clear focus on increasing traffic safety and protecting children and older people in particular. The initiative is comprehensively created and is supported by four ministries, including the Ministry of Children, Youth and Family as well as the Ministry of School and Education.
The Interior Minister ruled that many accidents are partly caused by their own misconduct and pointed out that consideration, caution and responsibility in traffic are essential. This is intended to fundamentally improve safety in road traffic.
Mayor Dr. Frank Dudda expressed his gratitude for the prominent support and emphasized the importance of caution and consideration for all road users. He referred to ongoing projects, such as the foot traffic check or the state competition "Ways2Work", which has produced the city as the winner, and thus confirmed the high priority of the topic in the administration.
impressions of the students
Various activities were offered in the gym, including a bicycle course and a rollover simulator. These stations were enthusiastically used by the students to learn more about the risks and security measures in road traffic. The children were even able to simulate into intoxicating glasses how alcohol influences the ability to drive. Minister Reul and Krischer also acted actively by informing themselves about the various stands directly from the students.
The children show great interest and enthusiasm for the security campaign. "The 'Vision Zero' is in the interests of all people," said one student, trying the security course.
The initiative also offers comprehensive material for teachers, schools and parents who want to organize their own traffic safety days. Contact persons are available in the NRW initiative office to offer support and to establish contacts with the partner organizations.
