Care for camels and horses: Egypt reacts to animal welfare criticism!

Kairo, Ägypten - Cairo (dpa) - An outcry of outrage goes through the world of animal rights activists and tourists: The famous camels and horses on the majestic pyramids of Gizeh are the focus of completely new measures! Antique and tourism minister Scharif Fathi surprisingly announced an initiative that aims to improve the care and well-being of these animals. In the future, regular veterinary examinations will be carried out in mobile teams to ensure that the animals receive the necessary medical care. Veterinarians should be on site permanently to help with appropriate medicines!

new standards for animal care

The pyramids, the centuries -old tourist magnets, are not only cultural landmarks, but also the scene of abuses. Sharif Fathi also announced that they want to set up special areas for camel and horse middle classes in order to improve the visitor experience and at the same time optimize the conditions for the animals. In the midst of all this progress, however, reality should not be forgotten: about 30 percent of the population of Egypt's life in poverty, and the animal welfare situation in the country is worrying. Agricultural animals are often malnourished and are abused, and the conditions in the Giza Zoo are alarming.

In particular, the conditions on the pyramids come across international incomprehension: The animal welfare organization PETA reported shocking practices in which camels are whipped for photos and horses for carriage rides. On hot days, the animals have to get by without enough water and feed and sometimes look for food in garbage dumps. The new measures now offer hope for a turn, but many remain skeptical whether this initiative is sufficient to sustainably improve the living conditions for the animals.
