Climate ambassador in Heinsberg: Students plant trees for the future!
Heinsberg, Deutschland - "Stop Talking. Start Planting" - an urgent call that conquered the hearts of the young climate ambassadors in Heinsberg! At the latest Plant-for-the-Planet Academy, 26 students aged 9 to 14 years gathered in order to be trained as new climate ambassadors. The municipal junior high school, which already served as an event location in 2016, was again the scene of this important event, which underlines the urgency of action in the climate crisis.
The second principal Angela Engels reported that the idea for the academy was born before pandemic. After the Corona break there was a rush of applications and she decided against an online event to give children the practical experience. Despite the invitation at 80 schools in the Heinsberg district, the organizers were satisfied with the number of participants, even if Engels would have liked more registrations. The young participants came from various schools, including the Cusanus-Gymnasium and the Episcopal High School St. Ursula.
a day full of knowledge and action
The academy not only offered the children the opportunity to find new friends, but also to actively work for the environment. Liz Buschfeld from Waldfeucht-Obl jumping and Enno Menkhaus from Wassenberg emphasized the importance of fighting together for nature. Through games and interactive sessions, the participants learned what the climate crisis means and what role trees play. A highlight was the planting campaign, in which the city of Heinsberg provided 500 hedge plants and ten large trees, supported by the Kreissparkasse Heinsberg.
The newly trained climate ambassadors had the opportunity to show their families what they had learned and how important climate -like lifestyle is. The junior high school, which is considered a UNESCO project school, has been committed to sustainability for years by planting a tree for every new child. The "Plant-For-the-Planet" initiative has spread in over 100 countries since its foundation in 2007 and inspires children worldwide to actively struggle for a better future.
