The Wassenberg fire brigade was called to a fire in the street "Im Junkerbruch" in the Birgelen district this afternoon at 3:37 p.m. The alarmed units from Birgelen, Wassenberg and the information and communication unit immediately set off. The situation was already critical on their arrival, since the fire had spread to an adjacent apartment building.

An additional team from the nearby places Orsbeck, Obloven and Myhl was activated to ensure basic protection. At the site, it was found that in addition to the carport in which a vehicle was parked, the upper floor of the house was also on fire. The firefighters were able to observe that, due to heat exposure, roller shutters had already melted and some slices of the neighboring building had fallen.

ordered rescue measures

In order to curb the spread of the fire, the firefighters immediately used several groups under respiratory protection. Overall, there were attacks from both inside and outside with three C pipes. Fear was exciting, the impending fire transmission to the neighboring building over 10 meters away. Thanks to the coordinated procedure, however, this could be saved.

In the further course of the operation, the use of four additional breathing protection team was necessary in order to finally completely extinguish the flames. Despite the courageous use, the affected building was no longer habitable, which is a considerable inconvenience for the residents.

The cause of the fire remains unclear and the police started the investigation immediately. In addition, a construction consultant of the technical relief organization is on site to check the stability of the mostly made of wood. Such an assessment is particularly important if you take into account the dangers that can assume wood structures.

In action, there was a large contingent of emergency services: 56 people from the Wassenberg fire brigade and the emergency services of the Heinsberg district with an ambulance from Hückelhoven. In addition, police and criminal officers from the Heinsberg district police authority, the Wassenberg construction station and also a construction consultant of the THW were involved.
