Generation change in the salon: Master hairdresser hands over responsibility to Maao
On October 1st, a significant generation change will be celebrated at the Bahnhofsplatz in Engelskirchen: The renowned hairdresser Hans-Wilhelm Hagen hands over his business to Ryad Maao after decades. The hairdresser Hagen, a significant size in the Oberberg region, accompanied by a team of 23 employees, including seven masters, has been looking for a suitable successor in recent years.
The 66-year-old Hans-Wilhelm Hagen, who dared to independence in 1979 at the age of only 20, was able to successfully hand over his branch in Gummersbach. But the search for a successor for his headquarters in Engelskirchen was challenging. "We have a high level here, that has to be kept," he emphasizes what his electoral attitude illustrates.
The search for a successor
The problem of succession not only affects Hagen's business, but is a nationwide phenomenon. According to the Central Association of German Crafts, around 125,000 master companies are looking for suitable successors in the next five years. Now Hagen has finally found someone: Ryad Maao, who will take over the management from October. The senior boss remains in the company for an hour and welcomes the responsibility to a new generation.
Ryad Maao, 30 years old and originally from the Syrian part of Kurdistan, fled to Germany in 2015 before the war. After his arrival, he initially worked as a hairdresser and quickly gained his boss's trust. "I quickly learned to appreciate my new employee's work ethic," explains Hagen. Maao, whose path began to the hairdressing industry through a recommendation of a colleague in Gummersbach, now laid the foundation for his master school, which he would like to start in January.
an impressive career
Before his escape, Ryad Maao had started studying literature. To finance his studies, he worked as a hairdresser until the Situation in his home country became unbearable. He quickly integrated into Germany and learned the language. In addition, he took online courses and continued to form what showed his motivation for a career in the craft.
2022 Maao became German citizen, and Hans-Wilhelm Hagen emphasizes how much he appreciates the energy and creativity of his successor. "As a hairdresser, you have to reinvent yourself every day." Maao is considered an example of successful integration for him, and together they are already planning to redesign the future of the salon.
With the transition of the management, Maao plans to continue the success story of hairdresser Hagen. At the same time, Hagen would like to use the newly won time to finally take a vacation trip and to get more involved in the club of the Loop shooters. "It could also be time for a trip to nature," said his considerations, with Maao, who recently discovered hiking as a hobby, promises interesting adventures.
