Schalke-ultras attack fans from Atalanta in Gelsenkirchen!

On Wednesday evening, after the Champions League game between Schachtar Donetsk and Atalanta Bergamo, a serious incident occurred in the area of parking spaces at the arena in Gelsenkirchen. Fans of FC Schalke 04, who are known as ultras, attacked a group of Atalanta supporters. According to the police, between 30 and 40 Schalke-Ultras hid in a bush to surprise fans from Italy.

The confrontation occurred when the Atalanta fans came from the guest area. The Gelsenkirchen police report that they were able to arrest four people in connection with the violent campaign. These people are associated with the Ultras Gelsenkirchen and the so -called Hugos, which are blamed to put behind this attack.

Details of the incident

To get the situation under control, the police used trimmings and pepper spray. According to reports, a fan of Atalanta was slightly injured. The incident took place at the parking lots E2 and E3, directly on the Berni Klodt-Weg, in the immediate vicinity of the arena. After the attack, the perpetrators fled towards Willy-Brand-Allee. Based on these events, investigations into assault and breach of the peace were initiated.

The arena on Schalke serves Shachtar Donetsk in the current Champions League season as a home venue, since no games can take place in Ukraine due to the Russian war of aggression. The Ultras of Atalanta from Bergamo maintain a friendship with the ultras of Eintracht Frankfurt, and in the past there have been violent arguments between the Ultras of Schalke and those of Eintracht Frankfurt.

These incidents throw a bad light on fan culture and increasing violence during football games. It is to be hoped that the relevant measures to combat such attacks will be taken to ensure the safety of all fans and to continue to focus on fair sport.
