Ottoman Empire experienced: an evening full of surprises in Cologne!
Wien, Österreich - The production "Akin's dream of the Ottoman Empire" celebrated its premiere in the Schauspiel Köln. Directed by Stefan Bachmann, the work of Akın Emanuel Şipal is described as an attempt to tell the complex history of the Ottoman Empire in less than two hours. "Nachtkritik.de" rated the play as "big throw", while the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" praised the experiment as "refreshingly different" and "juggling with peoples and customs". In the historical overview, the failed siege of Vienna is mentioned in 1529, but the procedure that was carried out later remains uncommented in 1683. Production manages to captivate the spectators with a colorful stage equipment and humorous characters, even if some historical details are presented strangely, as drama.koeln
a creative chaos
The story follows the author's age ego, played by Mehmet Ateşçi, who drives through Gelsenkirchen on an e-scooter, looking for inspiration for his processing of the Ottoman Empire. The encounter with a speaking half -horse leads him to a magical world that turns out to be that of the Ottoman Empire. Şipal unfolds a multi -layered narrative that knowingly changes between the past and modernity and throws light on unknown events in Turkey. The representation of the Ottoman dynasties both as a dazzling empire and as a construct consumed by conflicts leaves the audience both laughter and thinking about what makes the individual problems of the characters all the more tangible.
With an emotional climax in the final song that Ateş sings in Turkish, the audience is kidnapped in the dream of a confused empire. The experience is rounded off by creative costumes and a lively stage structure by Adriana Braga Peretzki. The piece, which also takes a feminist look at the gender roles, offers an entertaining and at the same time thoughtful evening, which is partly chaotic in its structure, but still says goodbye to the audience with a polite applause, as vienna.at reported.
