Stark honey from the Duisburg Zoo: a masterpiece by Frank Werner!

In the Duisburg Zoo, there was a remarkable success in the 2024 season: six bee colonies produced a proud 270 kilograms of honey. This extraordinary yield is the result of natural vegetation, which not only offers the bees sufficiently nectar, but also a diverse food source. Frank Werner, a committed hobby beekeeper, has been looking after these animals for many years. With its special transport method, the "honey bike", he ensures that the bee colonies are regularly supplied.

"Each of my six peoples has produced an average of 45 kilograms of honey, which means an increase of 10 kilograms per people this year compared to other locations," explains Werner, who supervises a total of 24 peoples in Duisburg. This shows how important the right environment is for the health and productivity of the bees.

a positive sign of species protection

zoo director Astrid Stewin sees the good harvest of the bees as a positive indicator that the efforts to create insect -friendly habitats in the zoo are effective. "In recent years we have created many insect -friendly areas to create retreat for insects and other domestic animals," she explains proudly. The activities in the zoo not only support the wild animals living here, but also set a sign of the importance of environmental protection.

Another aspect is the special opportunity for Zook guests to watch the bees in their natural habitat. At the show bees, in the immediate vicinity of the monkey house, visitors can watch the bees work while working and learn more about the beekeeping. It is a great opportunity to familiarize yourself with the fascinating world of honeybees.

A call to protect the insects

As a passionate bee, Werner also plays an important role as species protection officers. It indicates the dramatic decline in the insect population, which has been around 80 percent in recent years. "This is a disaster! We have to act and protect our bees," he appeals. It encourages everyone to put insect -friendly plants in gardens or balconies in order to improve the living conditions for bees and other pollinators.

"Our domestic insects are essential for the pollination of plants and the preservation of the food chain," adds Werner. Without these little helpers, many types of fruit and vegetables disappear from our shelves. It is therefore important that everyone makes their contribution to the protection of species.

The Zoo Duisburg not only offers a home for many domestic wild animals with its natural area, but is also a wonderful place for bees and other insects. Not only the plants are blooming between the trees and flowers, but also hope for a healthier environment and an awareness of the need for insect protection. The sugar -containing yield from the beehives therefore stands for enjoyment, but also for a message of sustainability and environmental protection, which is more relevant today than ever.

With a limited edition of honey, which is offered in special glasses, this harvest is now also available to zoological visitors. A 500 grams of glass can be purchased for 7 euros, while the gift editions with different varieties are available for 6 euros. Frank Werner is pleased to offer his product directly in Duisburg.

The importance of bees and their captivating world are increasingly captivating the Zook guests. It remains to be hoped that the positive developments in the Duisburg Zoo not only promote the well -being of the animals, but also cause broader sensitivity to protect our environment and the endangered insect species.
