Farewell to the thousand feet: Düsseldorfers take memories with them!

Düsseldorf, Deutschland - unforgettable and yet lost: The legendary “thousand football” in Düsseldorf, the Hochstraße, which had shaped the cityscape since 1962, had to give way to a new traffic concept. This iconic bridge, with its special architecture, which was reminiscent of the many legs of a thousand feet, was initially even listed. Citizens' protests were able to ward off the demolition for years, but finally the starting signal for the demolition work in February 2013 was given to make more space for the Kö-Bogen.

The last chance to say goodbye to this landmark was used by around 35,000 Düsseldorfers. In an emotional campaign, numerous people set out to secure a piece of their beloved millipede. Armed with hammer and chisel, they collected the last souvenirs from the high street before it should finally be a thing of the past. A picture full of nostalgia that impressively shows the connection between the citizens to their cityscape.

new traffic concept

Today is the thousand foot of history-instead, the Kö-Bogen-tunnel now leads traffic underground through the heart of Düsseldorf city center. A development that the city catapults into a new era of urban life, even if it leaves the memories of a loved one.
