Attention, drivers! Police accounted for frightening distractions at the wheel!
Last week, between October 7th and 13th, the police in the Recklinghausen district and Bottrop carried out intensive traffic controls. These measures were part of a cross-border and EU-wide initiative, known as the "Roadpol Safety Days". This time the focus was on combating distraction in road traffic, which are often triggered by mobile phone use while driving.
During this control campaign, about 1000 vehicles were checked. The result was alarming: 66 drivers were caught that they looked at their cell phones while driving. It is important to consider that a car covered about 14 meters at a speed of 50 km/h in a single second. This means that a quick look at the cell phone of just two seconds has almost 30 meters of blind flight, which significantly increases the risk of traffic accidents.

In addition to the distraction offenses, further security violations were found. 67 drivers had not created their seat belt, which also violates the road traffic regulations. All violations were punished by the police, which led to fines or administrative offenses. These measures underpin the need to draw the attention of the drivers onto the street and to minimize potential dangers.
The police have announced that it will also be increasingly paying attention to distractions in traffic in the future. Security on the streets is a top priority. The focus on traffic safety is trying to reduce the number of traffic accidents that often have serious consequences for everyone involved
