New bank and information board: Nature conservation in Kuhlenvenn blossomed!

A new highlight for nature lovers: In the nature reserve "Kuhlenvenn" in Gescher, visitors have been able to relax on a brand new bank since last summer and enjoy the breathtaking view of one of the most valuable wet meadows in the district of Borken. The new information board, which was also set up, offers exciting insights into the creation of the area and the impressive cooperation between the "Kulturlandschaft Kreischaft Kreis Borken" and the land consolidation authority of the Münster district government.

At an informative meeting on site, Thomas Bücking, the former project manager of the land consolidation Berkelaue, and his successor Markus Nowak with Bernd Garvert, the managing director of the Kulturlandschaft Kreischaft Borken, and Nico Eversmann from the Biological Station Zwillbrock e.V. about the success of this project. "The NSG 'Kuhlenvenn' has developed into a hotspot for migratory birds and is a popular breeding area of rare bird species," said Eversmann with pride. The area has increased from 21 to impressive 67 hectares since 1988, which was only possible through the land consolidation process, which serves as the key to solving land use conflicts between nature and agriculture.

successful land consolidation and sustainable agriculture

Not only benefits nature: farmers can now extensively manage the previously intensively used areas under strict requirements. This means that fertilizers and crop protection agents are taboo and the cattle stock must be reduced from the beginning of March to mid -June during the sensitive breeding season. "These measures promote species -appropriate animal husbandry and help to combat the decline in bird species," explains Garvert. Most of the area now belongs to the Federal Republic of Germany, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the "Kulturlandschaft Kreischaft Kreis Borken", whereby the Biological Station Zwillbrock e.V. takes over the professional support of the valuable green and water areas.
