Climate negotiations in Bonn: Red alert for climate protection!

The UN climate negotiations in Bonn show clear weaknesses in the progress of the international community. Ten years after the historic one Paris Climate Agreement central problems remain unsolved. In particular, the destruction of forests and the exit from fossil fuels are still on the agenda.

Greenpeace's Jannes Stoppel raises concerns about the lack of urgency in the negotiations. In his opinion, time is running out for the ambitious goal of limiting global temperature rise to a maximum of 1.5 degrees Celsius. This is a clear call to UN member states, including the EU, to submit new climate action plans by autumn.

The challenges of climate protection

The Paris Agreement, which represents the first global, legally binding climate protection agreement, aims to limit the increase in global average temperature to well below 2 °C compared to pre-industrial values. It also aims to focus efforts on 1.5 °C. However, the latter requires that global emissions peak as soon as possible. In the second half of this century, a balance must be struck between greenhouse gas emissions and removals in order to achieve the goals set.

Nevertheless, the situation looks critical. National reduction contributions and climate protection measures are assessed as inadequate. Loud Federal Environment Agency There is an ambition gap of 26 to 29 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalents by 2030, which urgently needs to be closed.

The role of Germany and international cooperation

Germany has the potential to assume responsibility as a leading industrial country. In order to contribute effectively to the global climate protection movement, the federal government must commit to international climate financing and support national climate goals. An important step in this direction could be cooperation with Brazil to closely link nature and climate protection at the upcoming COP30. An ambitious forest action plan is also needed to counteract the ongoing destruction of forests.

It is essential that the progress in the negotiations leads to concrete results. Support through multilateral initiatives and bilateral agreements is also necessary to advance international knowledge transfer and solution strategies. In particular, the G20 countries, which cause around 80% of global greenhouse gas emissions, are required to increase and implement their national contributions.

The global community faces the challenge of... Climate negotiations to take effective action and advance synergistic approaches to close the ambition gap. Only through cooperation and clear political objectives can the climate goals set be achieved in order to ensure a future worth living for future generations.
