Resilience in healthcare: How doctors can learn from pandemic!

Laimgrubengasse 10, 1060 Wien, Österreich - On March 18, 2025, Minister of Health and Social Affairs Korinna Schuhmann expressed in ZIB 2 that it was important to learn from the experience of the Corona period and to take a look at the positive and negative aspects. The results of a study by the Medical University of Graz and the University of Klagenfurt, which were published in the BMC Health Health Services Research in 2024, are particularly revealing. This study shows that the resilience of doctors has made a decisive contribution to the high quality of treatment during pandemic. Another positive influence was the further training in psychosomatic and psychotherapeutic medicine, which the minister also pointed out. This advanced training not only promoted the quality of treatment, but also the resilience of the medical specialists, which is of great importance in the healthcare system, according to the knowledge of the study, which has so far mainly been discussed in the context of an enquete by the Austrian Medical Association.

funding measures for health professions

The Austrian Society for Psychosomatics and Psychotherapeutic Medicine (ÖGPPM) is committed to targeted measures in the course of the current debate about the conclusions from covid pandemic. The proposals include promoting resilience in health professions on both individual and institutional level, a nationwide strengthening of psychosomatic medicine as a central interface for physical and psychological treatment channels as well as the expansion of the conversation quality in the health system. These suggestions are part of the program "Now do the right thing. For Austria", which strives for concrete improvements in the health sector.

In the context of these efforts, the importance of further training is also emphasized. The Curamed Academy plans to offer various training courses for the resilience coach for 2024/2025. These programs should not only deepen existing knowledge, but also convey new knowledge. A remarkable cooperation project is realized with the German Academy for Waldbaden and Health and provides for special training as a resilience coach that takes place in St. Martin. These training formats, which are certified by the State Medical Association and the Ruhr University of Bochum, include several modules that take place both on site in Nuremberg and St. Martin as well as online. The focus is on scientific inputs as well as self-reflection and life coaching, which enables the participants to strengthen their resilience and better react to challenges in the health sector.
