Europe's battery manufacturers rely on sustainability in competition

The global battery demand is about explosive growth! By 2030 it will more than triple and increase to up to 4.6 terawatt hours, according to the current forecasts of the renowned advice Roland Berger. This presents the European market in particular before immense challenges, since Asian manufacturers, especially from China, can produce far more cost -effective thanks to enormous capacities. Europe urgently has to reorganize itself strategically in order not to be left behind. European industry is faced with increasing production costs and uncertain developments in electromobility. Nevertheless, the continent is seen as a future key player in battery production, since its manufacturers rely on high technology and sustainability, as is explained in the comprehensive analysis by Roland Berger and RWTH Aachen in the "Battery Monitor 2024/2025".

increasing competition and innovation

Volatility in the battery market increases, as Roland Berger reports. The reason? The demand for electric cars grows more slowly than predicted, which has a strong influence on the planning of the manufacturers. And while the prices fall in China due to oversupply capacities, European companies are fighting with production bottlenecks and falling margins. A vicious circle that puts the industry under pressure! Despite these adversity, the EU manufacturers have decided to significantly lower their CO2 footprint and optimize the low-emission fingerprint of their products in order to stand out from competitors. The project to reduce emissions per kilowatt hour to 30 to 40 kg of CO2 could soon become a reality and provide European manufacturers rapidly competitive advantages.

The study by Roland Berger also illuminates the importance of sustainable production strategies. The switch to more environmentally friendly battery technologies and the close cooperation between European manufacturers could make the decisive difference in global competition. "It is no longer enough to deliver high quality - cost -efficient mass production is the key to success," warns Wolfgang Bernhart von Roland Berger. This newly financed strategy could help Europe to finally gain a foothold in the global battery market and to stand up for the future, while the industry is preparing for a completely new era of electrical mobility.
