Wolfsburg plans memorial at the Laagberg concentration camp: a memorial for the future!
Wolfsburg. A haunted call to remember: The Wolfsburg honorary citizens Rocco Artale and Hans-Joachim Throl are vehemently campaigning for the creation of a learning and memorial to the historical concentration camp in Laagberg. During their recent visit to the place, members of the Freundeskreis and the head of the Institute for Contemporary History and City Presentation, Anita Placenti-Grau, were present.
"It is impressive that the remains of the camp have been secured. These foundations will be a central part of the memorial and help to keep the suffering of the prisoners alive during the National Socialist tyranny," emphasizes Artale. The city council already took the planning decision on May 25, 2022, which paved the way for the realization of the memorial. An important step that not only recognizes the past, but also shapes the future.
a memorial for the future
"Wolfsburg has to face its history and preserve the memory of the victims of injustice," says Throl. He emphasizes that the memorial should not only be a place of commemoration, but also a reminder for future generations so that such atrocities never repeat themselves. Artals and Throl appeal to the city administration to drive the planning quickly and to start building the memorial. "It is our historical responsibility towards the victims and their descendants," adds Throl.
The urgency of these demands could not be clearer: A place of learning and commemoration on the Laagberg should soon become a reality in order not to be forgotten the horrors of the past.
