VW in the crisis: Do wage cuts and factories threaten?
Wolfsburg, Deutschland - At Volkswagen it is bubbling hard! The Auto giants are in a deep crisis and the employees feel the effects up close. In the room - a reality that the works council wants to prevent desperately would be in the room. But the top of the group sees it very differently and remains hard.
In the third tariff round on November 21st between VW and IG Metall, there was no progress. The employee side fought for security, while the employer side did not want to rule out factory closures. In an interview with "Welt am Sonntag", VW brand boss Thomas Schäfer left no doubt about it: "We don't see it at the moment". The threat not only affects vehicle works, but also important component locations. Schäfer emphasized that adaptation to the new realities was necessary - and that could have drastic consequences.
job cuts threaten!
The message is bitter: the job cuts due to demographic changes and partial retirement is not sufficient. "That would simply take too long," said Schäfer. These words are like a slap in the face for the employees and the IG Metall, which vehemently fights for location closings. The fronts are hardened and an agreement seems to be a long way off. If no compromise is found by November 30th, from December 1st, strikes at VW. IG Metall has already announced that it will not stand by and will be on the brink.
