Wittmund's military airfield: Return of the Eurofighter planned by 2025!

Wittmund, Deutschland - An exciting comeback is imminent! The military airfield in Wittmund in East Frisia, which is currently being extensively modernized, is preparing for the return of the Eurofighter. After a temporary move to Laage, where the jets have been stationed since the beginning of 2022, the Air Force will probably bring the first fighter jets back to its home location in early 2025. A spokesman for the Air Force confirmed that interim operation in Wittmund should then be possible again.

The comprehensive construction work is necessary because the infrastructure of the air force base no longer met the requirements of modern flight operations after 60 years. The renovation includes the approximately three-kilometer-long starting and runway as well as a new repair hall. The airfield is one of four Air Force locations for Eurofighter and plays a central role in securing German airspace. With the move to Laage, not only the jets, but also numerous soldiers, soldiers and civilian employees changed.

modernization with high investments

The construction work at the location should continue until 2032, with the aim of making Wittmund the most modern military airport in Germany. So far, around 489 million euros have already been invested in the first phase of modernization, and the total investments could increase to around 725 million euros. A spokesman for the Federal Office for Infrastructure, Environmental Protection and Services of the Bundeswehr announced that the completion of the new infrastructure is planned for 2025, but exact dates for the return of the fighter jets are still unclear.
