With heart and education: Teachers from Wilhelmshaven fight poverty in Kenya

Likoni, Kenia - The world looks away while children live in poverty in Kenya! Wiebke Endres from Wilhelmshaven, who founded the association "Teachers Without Borders" three years ago, has now visited the frightening living conditions at the partner schools. Instead of the usual vacation in the luxurious Safariparks, Endres and her colleague Ulrike Prize spent ten days in the Mombasa slums. They experienced a shattering reality, while children often play in the dirt or guard animals while their schools are in miserable condition.

In Lonbasa, the duo attended a school in Lonbasa, which is also an orphanage. The conditions are catastrophic: 300 children fight for survival every day, and the extent of poverty has made Endres speechless. "Hunger is one of her earliest experiences. You get the only meals at school because you often have nothing to eat at home," she reports with a broken heart. Many children wear broken or no shoes at all - a clear sign of despair that prevails here.

education - the only way out!

The - for the children - only hope: education! Every cent that flows to the "Little Angels" primary school is crucial. But the school has an acute need for action: Termiten threaten to bring the roof to collapse! The association also supports a secondary school in Mombasa, which enables young people in need to make their high school degree. "Mathematics is a universal language and it is incredibly important to teach here," says Endres.

The shock is great: According to UN estimates, around 260 million children still have no access to basic education! "This is a scandal!" Endres is outraged. The volunteer teachers are all the more committed, because they know that every help counts! Every child who gets the chance of education has the opportunity to escape poverty to the vicious circle. "The money arrives directly with the needy - nothing is deducted for us," emphasizes Prize. Your mission is clear: hope and education for the children in Kenya!
