Dike protection in Stade: First increases against climate change!
Dike protection in Stade: First increases against climate change!
The coastal protection measures in the Stade district pick up speed! In a crucial step against climate change, the first dike was increased by almost two meters. This measure is a direct reaction to the rising sea level and is intended to protect the region from the impending dangers of the storm flood season. "The 223 kilometers of dikes on the Elbe and its tributaries are in good to very good condition," emphasizes the responsible district building councilor Madeleine Pönitz. But that's the beginning!
This year there are three important construction projects on the agenda of the dike authorities and associations. In the area of Bützflether Sand and Stadersand, the Elbe dike is increased to an impressive 9.80 meters, while in the old country the dike is reinforced over a length of two kilometers. The dike in Krautsand is also raised to 9.90 meters. These measures are essential, because the current dike heights of over 8 meters urgently need to be adapted to the reality of the highest storm surges that were already between 5 and 6 meters.
challenges for coastal protection
But the challenges are great! The dike associations face a dilemma: how is the coastal protection weighted compared to nature conservation? Political and legal hurdles make the necessary measures difficult, especially near bird protection areas. In addition, the shepherds, which traditionally contribute to maintaining the dike, have to fight with new problems. The shepherds considerably strain the wolf problem and the associated higher demands on the hat work.
The situation is tense and time is pushing! Increasing the dike is not only a technical challenge, but also a race against nature. Climate change does not take a break, and the people in Stade have to prepare for the upcoming storm surges. The first steps are taken, but the way to complete security is still long!
