Increases in the diocese of Osnabrück: Those affected require more compensation!

A current final report from the University of Osnabrück has published shocking results on sexual violence in the diocese of Osnabrück. This report confirms the breaches of duty by those responsible in the diocese, which were already shown in the interim report of September 2022. The scientists emphasize that the diocese has not responded sufficiently to suspected cases for years, which led to a considerable abuse of trust and power.

The recent findings show that around 400 victims of sexual violence could be identified. These figures illustrate how serious the situation in the institution was. It becomes clear that the diocese endeavored to take measures according to the interim report, but the question arises whether these measures are sufficient.

fulfillment of the measures and deficits

According to the report, those responsible in the diocese have implemented numerous measures to counteract the deficits expressed. Nevertheless, the support and compensation of those affected remains behind the expectations. Prof. Dr. Hans Schulte-Nölke, one of the project managers, notes that there is a positive development in dealing with the victims: "It can be seen in the diocese of Osnabrück a learning curve that points upwards". However, this is not sufficient to adequately compensate for the extent of the injustice suffered.
The defects in the procedure and compensation practice urgently need to be tackled in order to bring about sustainable change. The report makes it clear that the previous measures represent a step in the right direction, but do not go far enough.
In addition, it is emphasized that the assistance for those affected does not correspond to the standards that would give state courts in comparable cases.

The diocese of Osnabrück therefore faces the challenge of not only critically questioning its internal processes, but also ensuring a transparent and fair compensation of the persons concerned. The topic also has far -reaching social implications, since trust in such institutions is massively eroded. The report clearly shows that more efforts are necessary to regain the trust of those affected and the public.
